Ephesians1
17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father
of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge
of Him,
Paul prays for the
Ephesians to receive the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of God.
He wants them to have insight into the mysteries, secrets and deep and intimate
knowledge of God. To understand thoroughly what is going on with them and God
and what happened to them when they became Christians. Instead of praying for
them to be healed or anointed or prosperous or anything else he prays for
revelation knowledge. Why? Because what they need to know is what God has
already done for them. Whatever they want God has already done it. But they
don’t know it yet. So they need to have a revelation. And this is true for all
of us.
18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened;
that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the
glory of His inheritance in the saints,
The first thing he prays
is for the eyes of their understanding to be enlightened so that they may know
what is the hope of God’s calling.
In other words He is
praying that God would flood the eyes of their hearts with His light, so that they
can know and understand the hope to which He has called each one of them.
And so that they may know
the glorious riches of God’s inheritance which is in us and which we have come
to.
This is the same prayer
for us today. That we would have the eyes of our understanding enlightened to
see and understand the hope to which we have been called and the glorious
inheritance that we have come to because we are in Christ.
19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power
toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power
The next thing he prays
for them to know is the exceeding greatness of God’s power and authority that
is in them as believers.
When we believed in Jesus
and became children of God, we received in us exceedingly great power by virtue
of the fact that we are in Christ. This power is immeasurable, unlimited and surpasses
any other power
20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from
the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places
This is power that God
used to raise Christ from the dead. Raising Christ from the dead was without a
doubt the greatest display of God’s power that has ever been seen and will ever
be seen in the world. And yet the same power and might that God demonstrated when
He did it is the same power and mighty strength that He has given to us as
believers. We have in us right now the same power that raised Jesus from the
dead and glorified Him and sat Him in heaven at the right hand of the Father.
21 far above all principality and power and might and
dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that
which is to come.22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be
head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him
who fills all in all.
God by this same great power
exalted and raised up Jesus far above all rule and authority and power and
dominion and every name that is named, above every title that can be conferred,
not only in this age and in this world, but also in the age and the world which
are to come. This is the power by which God put all things under Jesus’ feet.
And this power is in us now.
Every believer has this
power in them. We all have the power and strength of God that raised Jesus from
the dead and exalted Him far above all other power and dominion and names. This
great and mighty power is resident in all of us. Now Paul prays for us to
receive a revelation of this fact.
