Act 1:4-5
And, being assembled together with them, commanded
them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of
the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with
water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
The disciples were
already saved and had already received the Holy Spirit on the inside of them as
we see in John20:21-22 when Jesus breathed on them and told them to receive the
Holy Spirit; “Then said Jesus to them
again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And
when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the
Holy Ghost”
This was the initial
experience. This where they became born from above, born of the Spirit.
However, they were not yet baptized with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit had
come on the inside of them and made them believers and children of God but He
had not yet come upon them and made them witnesses filled with heavenly power.
So Jesus tells them to
wait and tarry until they are baptized with the Holy Spirit and filled with
heavenly power. Then they could go out as witnesses.
Acts1:8
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost
is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in
all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
This second experience
wasn’t about being born again or becoming a believer. It was about becoming a
witness. It was about receiving heavenly power. And this is what the baptism of
the Holy Spirit is about.
This same conversation
was recorded in Luke24;
“And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon
you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from
on high.” Luke24:49
In the baptism of the
Holy Spirit, you are immersed, submerged, drowned in the Holy Spirit. You
become filled with the Spirit. You become endued and baptized with power from
on high. The Holy Spirit comes upon you.
Baptism is when the Holy
Spirit comes upon you and clothes you with power. You disappear into Him. You
drown into Him. You begin to live life in the power of the Spirit.
In the baptism of the
Holy Spirit we are filled, engulfed and clothed with the power of the Holy
Spirit. The power of heaven.
We receive the ability to
do the same works that Jesus did by the Holy Spirit. We receive the ability to
walk in heavenly authority and power over the earth and devils and all negative
things. The Holy Spirit who is inside us when we get born again now begins to
flow through us and use us to touch people and to minister to the world. He
engulfs us with His power and grace and gifts.
Acts10:38
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost
and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed
of the devil; for God was with him.
Jesus was full of the
Holy Spirit. He was baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit. This is what
enabled Him to walk in power and to do all the great miracles, signs and
wonders that He did. The Holy Spirit was upon Him and anointed and empowered
Him with heavenly power and authority.
Acts2
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they
were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from
heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were
sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it
sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and
began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance
The disciples obeyed
Jesus and stayed in Jerusalem waiting for this second experience. Then on the
day of Pentecost it happened.
They were filled with the
Holy Spirit. They were immersed, submerged, drowned into the Holy Spirit. They
were clothed with heavenly power and authority. They were anointed and filled
with power and the ability of God. Now they were ready for ministry. They were
now ready to go forth and be witnesses.
“And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the
Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.”
Mark16:20
They were now operating
in the same heavenly authority and power as Jesus did. The Holy Spirit was
working with them and confirming the Word they were preaching with signs and
miracles
