Each of the above names and titles are a description of who the Holy Spirit is and what He does in us and through us.

Remember that we are His body on the earth. He lives in us. He walks in us. He moves in us and through us to do what He wants. He talks to people in and through us. He touches people in and through us. He ministers to people in and through us.

THE SEVEN PICTURES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

There are seven major pictures or types of the Holy Spirit that are shown throughout the Old and New Testaments. These types or pictures show us the ministry of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Sadly, many of us have come to call these types, shadows, pictures the Holy Spirit. Even worse many of us have come to prefer these manifestations to the person Himself. We don’t commune and fellowship with Him but we want to feel and experience these things. This is crazy.

The Holy Spirit is not these pictures or types. They are just manifestations of Him. They are like His perfume or aura. He is not the fragrance or aura, He releases the fragrance and aura. Let us discuss them;

Water

John7 37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

The Holy Spirit is not water, He is not a river and He is not a flood. But He can work or flow in us and through us in the same way that a river flows or in the same way that a sea of water overwhelms.

As He minsters to us or to others through us, His life and anointing flows like rivers of living water unto us and unto them. It satiates our souls and fills us with life, power, peace, joy, health, wisdom and wholeness.
In the Old Testament this picture of the Holy Spirit as a river is very common in the psalms and in the prophets.

Dew

Psalm133 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, Running down on the beard, The beard of Aaron, Running down on the edge of his garments. It is like the dew of Hermon, Descending upon the mountains of Zion; For there the LORD commanded the blessing, Life forevermore.

This speaks of the freshness of the Holy Spirit and His anointing. He ministers to our souls with the same freshness as the morning dew. And He is ever available to us to minister this freshness to our soul. Just as dew is ever available in the morning when we rise.

Fire

Matthew3 11 “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”

In Isaiah4:4 He is referred to as the Spirit of judgment and Spirit of burning “When the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and purged the blood of Jerusalem from her midst, by the spirit of judgment and by the spirit of burning”

Fire judges, destroys and purifies. The Holy Spirit is doing a purifying work in our souls as we come to Him. First, judgment has occurred on the Cross, our sins have been taken away and the old sinful nature has been taken away. God is not angry or judging us anymore. All of that has been finished at the Cross.

However we still have residues of the old way of thinking and relating to God that we need to renew our mind from and repent. In other words we need to repent from dead works and serve the Living God with grace and without fear in righteousness all the days of our lives.

The Holy Spirit does this work of repentance and renewal in us by burning the chaff of works, religion, sin consciousness, legalism and so forth. His fire purifies our heart to worship God in spirit and in truth. Without fear.

This is not a negative experience of God judging us and punishing us. Rather it’s a positive experience of God liberating our souls from religion and bondage through the truth and through the Spirit working in us. It feels good as the disciples experienced on the road to Emmaus;

Luke24 30 Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. 32 And they said to one another, "Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?"

Oil

Luke4 18 The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD."

This is speaking of the anointing of the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament men were smeared with oil as a symbol of the anointing of the Holy Spirit for service either in government or spiritual things. This anointing was external. It would come and go. It was a picture of the anointing of the Holy
Spirit.

We have received the real deal. We have the Holy Spirit living in us. The anointing is now resident in us and doesn’t come and go. His anointing is upon us for good and empowers us to do the works that Jesus did. If you have the Holy Spirit, you have the anointing of God upon you and in you.

Acts10 38 “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”

Dove

Luke3 22 “And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, "You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased."

This can represent the gentleness and peaceful nature of the Holy Spirit. Contrary to what most of us have come to believe about Him, He is not harsh, mean, forceful, insecure, intimidating, controlling etc. as many preachers make him out to be.

The anointing is not an excuse for being a jerk, harsh, mean and insensitive to people. The Holy Spirit is gentle and peaceful and understanding.

Wine

Luke5 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.

This speaks of the fact that we are supposed to be under the influence of the Holy Spirit. he does not want to control us. he wants us to yield to Him and let Him influence us and our speech and our behavior.

Wind

John3 8 “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit."

This speaks of His mystery. He cannot be understood by the carnal and by natural. We relate to Him by faith and understand Him by faith.
