"And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever" Jn14:16
Comforter.
This word Comforter or helper is the Greek word parakletos. It means one who is called to come to the side of someone else.
It is derived from two words; Para which means coming alongside of e.g. parallel, paramedical… and Kaleo which means to call, a calling, a vocation or purpose. Combine them and you have one whose purpose is to be alongside someone else or one whose calling is to accompany another.
It has been translated in a number of different ways in the bible.
The Amplified Bible translates it in John14:16 as all of them; let us look at it;
“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever” Jn14:16 AMP
Comforter. The Holy Spirit is our comforter. He encourages and consoles us when we need comfort. He gently wraps His peaceful arms around us and gives us comfort when we need it.
Counselor. The Holy Spirit is our counselor, advisor and guide. He counsels us in every area of life, He is ever willing and available to give us counsel, advice, wisdom. He tells us what we should do, He gives us strategy, He gives us plans and wisdom whenever we need it.
Helper. The Holy Spirit is our helper. He is available to help us in any way whenever we need help. Sometimes the best prayer we can pray is HELP
Intercessor. The Holy Spirit is our intercessor. He steps in the gap for us when we do not know how to pray and He helps us to pray accordingly and appropriately. “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” Rom8:26-27
Advocate. The Holy Spirit is our advocate. He is our defense attorney or lawyer. The Holy Spirit is not defending us before God because God is not accusing us. He defends us when satan, the accuser of the brethren and his accomplices accuse us. He reassures us of righteousness and holiness.
And He always wins.
“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you in their synagogues. You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.” Mat10:16-20.
Strengthener. The Holy Spirit is our strengthener. He empowers us and enables us to do what God wants us to do or what we need to do. This strength is not only spiritual strength but also physical energy when we need it.
An example of physical strength is Samson “Then Samson called to the LORD, saying, "O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray! Strengthen me, I pray, just this once, O God, that I may with one blow take vengeance on the Philistines for my two eyes!" Judg16:28
Stand-by. The Holy Spirit is our stand-by. He is a friend that sticks closer than a brother, He will never leave us nor forsake us, He is always with us whether in joy or sorrow, in victory and in defeat, He is always with us, everywhere.
Coach. The Holy Spirit is our divine coach. This is His partnership with us in life and ministry. He doesn’t live for us or do ministry for us but He is our partner in the ministry, He is to us in ministry who God the Father was to Jesus in the ministry, what He says is what we say and He does the works.
