1. Work builds esteem.
God created us with the desire to work. When we work we have a sense of worth, we have a sense of value. People who don’t work don’t have self-worth or value. They feel wasted, useless etc.
2. Work makes you a contributor. A giver
God created us with the desire to give and contribute. When we work we contribute and give to our family, our community, our society and so forth. Work makes us contributors and servants to others. We feel satisfied and fulfilled when we work and supply and provide for others. We feel that we have a purpose in society, that we are useful. This is a healthy feeling.
3. Work builds character and virtue
Work is tough. It challenges us, it stretches us, it equips us for life, it trains us, we learn to deal with people, we learn to be responsible, we learn to be accountable, we learn to live disciplined lives etc. When we don’t work we lose something on the inside of us. We damage our character. We rob our self of the opportunity to develop and mature.
4. Work brings meaning to life.
People who don’t work feel meaningless and miserable. Work is not about money, it is about life. We were created to work. It is how we have dominion over the earth. Gen1:28
5. Work is the image of God in man. It is our divine design
When we don’t work we don’t accurately reflect the image of God in us. God is a worker. 6 days He worked, 1 day He rested. Two thirds of His name is Go and backwards it is Do. God works.
Jesus said that His Father is always working even now. “But Jesus answered them, My Father has worked [even] until now, [He has never ceased working; He is still working] and I, too, must be at [divine] work.” Jn5:17
This is why we have creativity and imagination. It is why we have talents and skills. It is why we invent and innovate. It is why we are always creating new things, new knowledge, technology, construction, music, art, science etc. It is why we are always seeking to move forward and improve. This is our divine design. Like God, we are creators, and we do this through work.
